Creatin: Valentines Day Floral

So if you didn't know I have the awesome job of teaching Floral Design- yes it is an actual class in High School (you should have taken it, its pretty much the best class ever). Many don't know (ahem-boyfriends & husbands) that Valentines Day is coming up- and to most this is a pretty big deal. Maybe not a huge deal but you best get your girl some flowers February 14th. To florists Valentines day is like the super bowl. In fact this one holiday accounts for approximately 26% of all holiday floral business. Can you imagine a little over a quarter of your yearly work IN ONE DAY? Thats crazy, but love will do that to ya eh?

So in my class we try to do a few different floral designs to reflect this holiday rush. This year we decided on a asymmetrical heart themed arrangement. Pretty easy to do and replicate with the following steps! Would be perfect on the table for the big day.

Floral Teachers I have a downloadable PDF with the instructions with the materials, it is kid approved :)

The materials needed:

-small square bowl (or whatever flat container you want)

-2 feet aluminum wire

-Floral foam

-2to3 stems leafy foliage

-6 stems Myrtle (or line foliage of your choice)

-3 stems wax flower

-3 roses (thats it-phew they are bit pricey this time of year)

-3 stems of carnations

First you need to prep your container- I make my kids use anchor tape to tape their foam in place. This way nothing moves while they are walking class to class throughout the day.

Next you are going to green down starting with your leafy foliage. The way I tell my kids- every which way until you see no foam. You want to place a taller piece in the back left corner.

Next you will add the line foliage.I used Myrtle. Add a few stems at staggering heights towards the back left corner. With the rest you will cut down and use to continue to green down.

Now it is time to add the wax flower. This is last chance to cover any mechanics. You will cut and place around. You will want to add a taller piece toward back left.

Almost done! Next you will place the three roses in the back left corner of the arrangement. Start at the top and stair step down.

Next you will create a small heart out of the three carnations in the front right corner.

The final step is to create a heart of the two feet aluminum wire and place on the right side of the arrangement.

There you go! An arrangement that is sure to wow whoever you give it too! This arrangement (buying in bulk for 6 classes) cost around $10 an arrangement BUT it also retails $50-60. We save money and got the experience making it!

Happy Creatin!
